Looking at one of the oldest forms of traditional art that has survived and remains strong today, and what it reveals about our human consciousness. Portraiture remains one of the most popular genres in many art disciplines.
It is the collective social journey evident through portraiture as a whole that is magnificent. In Contemporary art, portraiture has many possibilities. Through understanding our predisposition to self-emulate through the portrait, we can use the same inclination to overcome individual egos. All throughout human history, we have had a fascination, almost obsessive, with looking at and seeing our faces. This curiosity reveals perhaps something about our search for true identity.
Sawidji’s portraiture is one of the vehicles used to develop our creative process. Often, through a collaboration between creative individuals and their different skills and processes.
One of the works using portraiture, carrying our ideas and vision, the first Sawidji Project and exhibition Red Chair and WHite Room. An exploration of the transformations in Balinese collective identity through a conceptual and symbolic portrait narrative.
